The Indie Hacker Launch Checklist: What Actually Moves the Needle

The Indie Hacker Launch Checklist: What Actually Moves the Needle

Launching software as an indie hacker is different. You’re not managing a team of 20 marketers and a million-dollar ad budget. It’s you, a text editor, and the product you built. This isn’t about vague strategies; it’s about a specific, repeatable indie hacker launch checklist for solo founders aiming for impact.

Before you even think about “launch day,” define what success looks like for this launch. Is it 10 beta sign-ups? 100 email subscribers? Your first paying customer? Without a concrete goal, you can’t measure if what you’re doing is working.

Pre-Launch: Setting the Foundation

The real work starts well before you hit “publish.” This phase is about validating, building an audience, and getting feedback.

1. Identify Your 5 Early Adopters (Before You Build)

Don’t build in a vacuum. Find 5 people who experience the problem your product solves. Talk to them. Really listen. What words do they use to describe their pain? What have they tried? What worked, what didn’t? This informs your product’s core features and, critically, your messaging. I did this for Nimea by observing how people described their struggles with habit consistency and mood swings in online communities. The specific words they used became keywords for my landing page.

2. Build a Dead-Simple Landing Page (Before You Launch)

You need a place for people to land. This isn’t your full product website. This is a single page with:

Use tools like Carrd (for simplicity) or Webflow (more control, still no-code). The goal is to collect emails, not to perfectly showcase your entire vision. Get this up in an afternoon.

3. Start Documenting Your Journey (Early & Often)

This is perhaps the most undervalued step for solo founders. You have a unique story: building software alone. People resonate with authenticity. Share what you’re building, why, what challenges you’re facing, and how you’re solving them. This isn’t just about “content marketing”; it’s about building a connection.

Launch Day: Where to Announce

When it’s time to officially “launch,” your goal is to get your product in front of as many relevant eyes as possible. This isn’t a one-off event. It’s a series of announcements across different channels.

1. Product Hunt: The Gold Standard (For Early Traction)

Product Hunt remains a top channel for new product discovery.

2. Indie Hackers: Your Community (Authentic Feedback)

The Indie Hackers community is built for people like you.

3. Relevant Subreddits (Targeted Audiences)

Reddit has highly engaged niche communities.

4. Twitter/X: Real-time Updates & Conversations

Twitter/X is where many founders share their build journey.

Post-Launch: Learning and Iterating

Launch day is not the finish line. It’s the starting gun.

1. Analyze Your Data (Quickly)

Where are users coming from? What are they doing in your app? Where are they dropping off? Use basic analytics (Google Analytics, Plausible, or even your server logs) to understand user behavior. Don’t wait weeks. Look at the first 24 hours, then 72 hours. This tells you what to fix first.

2. Collect Feedback (Directly)

Reach out to your early users.

3. Iterate Relentlessly (And Transparently)

Based on your data and feedback, fix, improve, and add. Then, tell your audience about it. “Thanks to early feedback, we just shipped X fix!” This builds trust and shows you’re listening. Your first launch is rarely perfect. Your response to its imperfections defines your trajectory.

Launching is a skill you refine with each product. For WolfPost, I focused heavily on showing the “before and after” of AI post generation because that’s what early users resonated with most – the tangible time-saving. Your product will have its own core value, find it and amplify it.
